eBooks vs Physical Books

The Case for eBooks

  1. Kindles (and other reading devices) are lighter and more compact than a physical book. This means they can more easily be put in a handbag, or read one-handed while eating.

  2. Over a thousand books can be stored in less physical space than one traditional novel. This means multiple books can be read while travelling without the extra weight.

  3. eBooks are, on average, $5-$10 cheaper. (Although the e-Reader itself is an extra up-front cost.)

  4. e-Readers have handy features such as the ability to highlight text (without marking up a precious paper book), bookmark quotes, and look up definitions of words just by clicking on them.

  5. You can buy an eBook without leaving the house - nay, without leaving your bed - and have it instantly. No waiting for delivery!

  6. Sometimes the font size in physical books is too small, and every so often the words runs really close to the spine so it’s an effort to read. With eBooks, the words are always very clearly on the front of the page, and you can make the font size whatever you want.

The Case for Physical Books

  1. You can line them up on your shelf as a constant reminder for yourself and everyone who comes over that you are a Cool Person who Reads, and also LOOK AT THE PRETTY COVERS!

  2. New Book Smell™

  3. For some reason, browsing in a book store is just more fun than browsing online. If you’re someone who likes to chat with sales clerks, this is an added bonus.

  4. You can easily lend them to a friend.

  5. They never run out of batteries.

  6. Although study results are mixed, some research suggests we are more likely to retain information that we read on paper.

CONCLUSION

It’s a tie. I’d say eBooks are more convenient for reading on the go, but it’s worth investing in physical copies of your favourite books if you want to display and recommend them to others.

But mostly, read however you want!
